The Figure Eight Knot
Figure Eight Knot

The figure eight knot is used in the ends of running rigging to prevent it from un-reeving. When pulled up tight it forms a larger knot than a thumb knot, so is more suited to this purpose. The knot can also be used as a tempoary stopper in other situations. The knot is usually tied in the ends of rope.
