The Granny knot is often used to seal a variety of containers from jam pots to bags and parcels. The knot is usually used to tie ends of two peices of sting or cord together. Used in this way abord any seagoing vessel is asking for trouble.

FOR A LARGER IMAGE click the animation This is because this is knot considered an unsafe knot. The granny knot can capsize into two reversed half hitches. If you jerk one end after tying it, you will see that it spills easily into reversed half hitches. Once capsized into hitches they will slip easily and could cause the joined cords to come apart at a critical time.
There are better and safer knots that can be used for the purpose of joining cords and ropes together.
