Introduction
The History of knots is older than sailing. Without some knowledge of
knotting the first sailing vessels would not have set sail on any body
of water, let alone traverse the vast oceans that form two thirds of
the surface of this planet.
It is mainly due to the tenacity of sailors from around the world that
the knowledge of knots and knotting is so large. Between them they have
given us a heritage that spans many generations and cultures. Intertwined
with the colusion of sailors swapping knots from around the world is the
development of rope and rope construction. As rope developed from different
materials it, it became possible to tie a wider variety of knots for specific
purposes. As the size, shape and materials used for seagoing vessles altered,
new methods of securing, attaching and release had to be invented.
Each change brought about fresh ideas and new knots came about.
Although the largest proportion of knots can be attributed to sailors,
many trades people use knots in a diverse variety of situations. Some of these
trades are related to sailors and sailing such as sail-makers and riggers, but
many trades have specific situations that need to be addressed. Such
as how are you going to get down from a steeple yet bring the rope used
down after you have safely reached the
ground. This and other
situations will be discused in these pages.
So whether you are a farmer, sailor, butcher or baker, there will appear
at sometime a knot or knots that will be directly relevant to you. If your
interest lies in a hobby from climbing to fishing or just tying knots for
pleasure there will be knots you will want to try.
As the site grows you will
find knots from many industries and trades, the majority of which will
be animated so that you will be able to see how to tie the knot for
yourself.
