Polyester is our most popular rope fibre for marine use (along with Dyneema), largely thanks to its high strength capabilities that it retains, even when wet. There are ropes available that combine the two fibres, such as this Dyneema SK78 Colour Fleck Performance Rope that has a Dyneema core and polyester cover, so you get the best of both worlds.
Polyester rope is UV and abrasion resistant, plus will remain flexible, even when subject to extreme weather - so it's not hard to see why it's such a popular rope fibre.
Nylon vs Polyester Rope
Nylon rope has a high amount of flexibility, which is why it's often used as a towing rope. On the flip side, polyester rope offers very little stretch, which is why it's so popular in marine environments. Although both ropes do not float (check out polypropylene rope if you require a floating rope), nylon rope absorbs water and will weaken when wet, where-as polyester rope does not. So although nylon rope may be the stronger option when both fibres are dry; the moment both are exposed to water, the tables turn.
