Sisal is a natural fibre that derives from the Agarve Sisalana plant, primarily grown in Mexico. Sisal rope has a rough, fairy feel, which is why it's often used as tug of war rope and to make cat scratchers. The 100% biodegradable rope is also great for use outdoors as garden decking rope thanks to its excellent resistance to salt water and all weather conditions. It must be noted that, due to its natural fibre construction, Sisal rope will shrink by around 10% when wet and lengthen when it dries.
How strong is sisal rope?
Sisal is a strong natural fibre rope, with a typical 10mm length capable of holding loads of no less than 700kg. However, numerous tests have revealed that sisal rope is around 20% weaker than Manila natural rope. On the flip side, sisal rope is less-expensive than Manila rope and represents better value for money.
